via Castello, 24 , Piove di Sacco (PD) - 35028

The Bassini complex stands on a rather large rectangular-shaped area located between the properties of the parish of the Cathedral of San Martino and Via del Castello, right next to the defensive system of the “castle” of Piove. The typical architectural complex of the Venetian villa most likely arose in this area in the second half of the 16th century, after privatization following the loss of military functions and state rank.

Gian Andrea Bassini in the mid-1700s intended to embellish his property, requesting permission to move the small public road (now called Via Castello) close to the medieval circuit. The new road would be built on the Fiumicello embankment to detach the manor house from the road, providing it with an entrance garden and a new, wider protective wall. The overall project also included the renovation of the mansion and the construction on the north side of an adjacency. Unfortunately, the project was not fully realized, so that the facade of the mansion appears to be incomplete.

After the Bassinis, the area of Via Castello passed by inheritance to the Stua family, and then, at the end of the 18th century, to the Caotorta family. It underwent further changes in the first half of the nineteenth century, following the fall of the Serenissima (1797), when in the Austrian Cadastre of 1831-1835, it appears that the property was managed by Domenico Gidoni.

In 1899, with a new deed of sale, the owner became Don Roberto Coin, parish priest of the Cathedral of Piove di Sacco, who adapted the complex of buildings, to the needs of a kindergarten for the education of children from three to six years old. The management of the kindergarten was entrusted to the Sisters of Charity of Saint Mary Child, of Saints Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa.

The neoclassical building in the early 1900s was then modified by widening the back of the central section to make a small church, which still includes the central altar area, two side chapels and the hall, separated from the presbytery by a series of three small arches.
Inside the garden there is also the Lourdes Grotto, designed by Luigi Battisti, and ample space for children to play.

The architectural complex, which belonged to the Bassini family, has housed the Santa Capitanio School for over a century.

The Villa is privately owned. It opens to the public occasionally.
The facility can be visited in its public spaces by contacting the secretary.
