The new museum has its origins in the Physics Cabinet started in Padua in 1739 by Giovanni Poleni, a scientist of European renown. The collections, enriched with 16th- and 17th-century instruments, lead up to 20th-century innovations in the field of physics research. The museum holds unique pieces such as sundials, astrolabes, and instruments to give direct and immediate demonstrations of the laws of physics. Early x-rays made using X-rays are joined by instruments for the study of cosmic rays-a journey through the development of scientific thought and technology ranging from astronomy to mechanics, from pneumatics to electricity.
