With its 75-metre-high bell tower, the Cathedral of Pieve di Soligo is one of the main symbols of early 20th-century architecture in the Unesco Hills area. Built between 1936 and 1937 by architect Domenico Rupolo, it is an eclectic and imposing structure that combines neo-Romanesque and neo-Renaissance styles, 17th-century altars with 20th-century frescoes and sculptures. On the wall of the left aisle is a chapel housing the ancient baptismal font and the 1540 altarpiece by Francesco da Milano depicting the Assumption of Mary. Adorning the side altars are works by sculptors Marta Sammartini and Giovanni Possamai. Inside is the tomb of Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo, an illustrious economist and sociologist who lived in Pieve di Soligo, and who was one of the leading figures of the Italian Catholic movement for his vision of a Christianly inspired social organisation based on the primacy of subsidiarity.
