An expert guide of the history of the area will take you on a walk through the historic center of Dolo, a lively river town on the Brenta Riviera!
Itinerary: Horses Bridge, Isola Bassa where you will discover the watermills, the “Squero”, an old shipyard where boats were once repaired, the Old and New sluice gates and waterway Seriola.
The itinerary aims to trace the transformations that the small village on the banks of the Brenta River has undergone over the centuries. The common thread of this walk is related to water. The theme of water, dear to the Republic of Venice, is intertwined several times with the history of Dolo, shining through in the monumental architecture of the Squero and the nearby watermills. But it was with the Serenissima's creation of the Doge's Aqueduct that an unbreakable bond was created between the city and its mainland.
Water as a source of life but also as a source of danger, as we are reminded by the plaques posted in the old sluice gate, that record the terrible flooding of the Brenta River. We will retrace the route of the horses that pulled the boats along the Brenta in crossing the Horses Bridge and visiting the Old and New sluice gates.
There will be no shortage of folk tales and traditions still alive in the historical memory of Dolo!
