The navigation basin, or closed, is a lifting basin with a system of locks of the Vincian type. It can be described as a water elevator that serves to overcome the difference in water between Padua and Venice.
The basin, also called "Porte di Dolo" was built in 1625. This is the place where duties were paid on goods: in fact, there is still a stone table with tariffs placed next to a hydrometer that detects the floods of the Naviglio Brenta from 1770 to 1825.
In 1934 the new doors were installed further south and consequently the basin was interred, which however preserves intact its oval structure in Istrian stone. The Municipality of Dolo, following a restoration work, has been able to enhance the old "Porte".
