Mura Bastia
Via Sant'Elena , Pederobba (TV) - 31040
Remains of a medieval castle dating back to the 12th century. The fortified complex seems to have been taken by Ezzelino III da Romano from the Onigo family. At the end of the Ezzelino period, the castle became the property of the Municipality of Treviso. After a long process between the Municipality and the Onigo family, in 1266 the castle was returned to Giovanni da Onigo, who rebuilt his two-story house with a curtain wall in front of the cistern, useful for his security. The castle has always represented a strategic stronghold over the Piave valley. Important in the war against the Count of Gorizia (July 1313), it became crucial when, during the Venetian-Scaliger War, the Trevisani were expecting reinforcements from the Duke of Carinthia precisely through that direction. On that occasion, the castle was reinforced at "Bastia," playing a decisive military role between October 16 and 19, 1386. It served as an observation point and post for controlling the Piave during World War I. Since 1994, research and targeted restorations of the structures have aimed to recover the castle's original appearance and to clarify the specific historical moments that long affected this strategic area.
