The building was designed and wanted by the cultured abbot Filippo Farsetti in the mid-18th century in the French Rococo style that he had been able to admire during his stay in Paris, also inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The Venetian nobleman had the villa built so that he could devote himself to his great passions: architecture, art, and botany. In fact, the original complex counted several buildings, structures and stage compositions, including greenhouses, lemon houses, labyrinths, a botanical garden and groves adorned with statues and fake ruins. Filippo Farsetti is credited, among other things, with introducing one of the first magnolia specimens in Italy, later transferred to the Botanical Garden of Padua.
The guided tour will take you through the history and long vicissitudes that led to the dispersal of all the artistic and literary heritage that was inside the sumptuous building. It will be possible to visit the three floors of the dominical palace, the garden in front of the villa, the adjacencies, and the stables. Although the abbot was only able to partially decorate his palace due to excessive expenses, traces of 18th-century frescoes and inscriptions dating back to World War I can still be seen in some rooms.
