Chiesa di San Benedetto

Chiesa di San Benedetto

Via Romanin, 1 , Trissino - 36070

The foundation of this church is very ancient, possibly of Benedictine origin. In 1718, the church underwent a significant transformation; in 1875 it was decided to build a new one, and the existing one was demolished, with the materials being used for the new church, which was placed in a more convenient location for the population. In 1945, at the end of the war, it was enlarged, and in 1960 it was declared a parish.                                                                                                                              The construction of the third church (1875-1945) occurred due to the continuous growth of the population, as the church could no longer accommodate all the worshippers during the celebration of the single festive mass, making the need for a new church urgent. Two priests proposed a wooded height located slightly south of the old church for the new church. One took care of the design and organization of the work, while the other was responsible for the execution. The construction was thus completed two years after it began. Shortly after, work began on the ceiling and the plastering of the walls. The interior is simple both in the nave and in the semicircular apse, slightly flattened in the middle: all in Tuscan-Roman style. The facade, already demolished in 1945, was in classical style. The four pilasters with Corinthian order capitals, topped by a suitable pediment as high as the roof, constituted the scarce exterior ornamentation. The balustrade and the steps of the presbytery, made of marble, come from Chiampo.
In 1899, the chapel and altar on the north side were erected, first dedicated to the Immaculate, then to Saint Anthony, and in 1910 the chapel and altar on the south side. Only with the decorations carried out in 1924 could the work be considered complete as far as the architectural and decorative aspects were concerned.
In the period between 1924 and 1945, the church underwent no alterations. It only became enriched with various accessories: two beautiful side panels next to the presbytery, a good American-style double-manual organ, a monumental catafalque, a confessional, a chandelier, and some vestments, including a rich set of samisdoro and damask for the columns. Thus, the third church of San Benedetto originated and was fulfilled, finding its ideal continuity in the ancient Benedictine church.
