Duomo di San Pietro

3, Via Camillo Benso Conte Di Cavour , Schio - 36015

Saint Peter's Cathedral, as it appears today, is the last of many reconstructions that began from a medieval chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, existing on Mount Gorzone.
Dependent on the ancient Pieve of Pievebelvicino, the mother church of all others in the Val Leogra, from the 12th century the archpriest moved his residence here, and since then it has become the main church of the valley. The current church, reached via a scenic staircase, built in 1837 by Tommaso Meduna, is preceded by the classic pronaos, with two small bell towers, constructed between 1805 and 1820 by Carlo Barrera, based on a design by Antonio Diedo, who was inspired by Palladio's temple in Maser. The central nave, built between 1740 and 1754 by Giovanni Battista Miazzi, was expanded in 1780 with the choir, designed by Domenico Cerato of Padua. In the 19th century, industrial development and population growth, linked to industrialization and favored by Alessandro Rossi, saw the construction of the rectory and the expansion of the church with the two naves between 1877 and 1879. While the altars are of 18th-century craftsmanship, the internal decoration is the work of various artists active between the 19th and 20th centuries, including the Slovenian Valentino Zajec (for the bas-reliefs of the nave attic and the statues of the apostles and evangelists), Giovanni Busato (stereochromies of the presbytery and the altarpiece of Saints Charles and Louis), Valentino Pupin (for the vault and the altarpiece of Saint Joseph), Romano and Guido Cremasco for the images of the altars, Tito Chini (apse and window sails), and Alfredo Ortelli (Jesus the Teacher). Inside the church and in the sacristy are precious paintings from various eras and authors: from Alessandro Maganza to Tomaso Pasquotti. The church has two organs: a Mascioni from 1942 and one from the 18th century of Apulian school. To the right of the church, preceded by a beautiful terrace garden, is the rectory, characterized by the public clock on the facade. Inside are preserved paintings from various epochs and authors. The building houses, on the top floor, the Archive and Library of the Cathedral.
