Via Roma, 24 , Tonezza del Cimone - 36040

Location: Tonezza contrà and surroundings
Difficulty: Easy
Length: 7 km
Elevation gain: 180 meters

For the Tour of the low contrades of the old town of Tonezza, we start from the parking lot of contrà Via, to the left of the junction between the provincial road to Folgaria and the municipal road to the contrà Fontana and Grotti.

Start of the Tour above the Cemetery

You start towards the center of Tonezza and head towards the path that starts next to the cemetery parking lot. A little further on, you encounter a fork for Mount Spitz, but you continue walking along the main route. After about half an hour, you arrive at a square with a path that joins the paved road. The path a little further on reconnects with the forest to continue among hornbeams and beeches. Along the way, you can see that there are many flat lands. These are old terraces for cultivating mostly potatoes, now left to nature.

From contrà Canale towards Forni location

The path veers slightly right to rise up to contrà Canale and towards the road of Campogrande. The view is beautiful as it allows you to admire all the Seven Municipalities with a nice view of the fields of Rotzo and Castelletto. You return to the woods to meet the path to Forni location which then ascends to Tonezza.

27th bend of Barcarola - Tonezza

If you want to visit the low contrades, you need to head towards the 27th bend of Barcarola-Tonezza. Along the way, you catch a glimpse of a small contrada called Suggi, where now only one house resides. A little further ahead, continuing along the paved road, you see a house where Gigia Jongara lived, an old lady who always dressed in black and defended her territory and her home.

Passage through Pierini location and arrival

Upon reaching the beginning of the bend, the path departs from the main road and continues left towards Pierini location. Continuing along the path, you encounter the house of the Filippini, where many different parish priests came and went and now is unused, with a staircase next to the road leading to contrà Campana. The view from here is even more beautiful than at the start: a spectacular view of the Seven Municipalities and Val d’Assa. Continuing along the main paved road, one can notice a unexploded bomb that has been rendered safe by an expert, a reminder of the conflicts of the War. If you continue further, you will encounter more houses until you reach the path of Bruli that leads towards the center of the town.
