Sentiero del Sejo

Sentiero del Sejo o Strada Romana

Piazza Castello , Marostica VI - 36063

The Roman presence in Veneto has been attested since 250 BC, but it is in 172 B.C. that the colonization begins with the foundation of some settlements, including Bassano del Grappa, Cittadella and Padua.

It was in this time that the Romans built roads, bridges, banks and canals, leading to the foundation of other cities: Vicenza, Verona, Oderzo, Conegliano, Altino, and Aquileia. The Venetian territory becomes an important region for communication with Northern Europe and the East. Padua, which is at the center of this great road network, becomes the most important city, located in a plain made fertile by the many streams, the favorable climate and large wooded areas, where the Venetians had already spread the breeding of cattle, but above all, of excellent horses and sheep from fine wool.

It was in order to transfer the cattle to the freshest mountain pastures, during the hot summer months, that roads connecting Padua to the Pre-Alpine Highlands were built. One of these routes led to Marostica and from here, crossing Crosara and Conco to the Asiago Plateau (later called "of the Magnificent Regency of the Seven Municipalities"). Today this road can be walked only in some parts, in the stretch Contrà Turchia - Contrà Cassoni - Crosara.
