Caltrano owes its strategic importance to the ancient Bridge that was already present in Roman times from and towards the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities.
Repeatedly reconstructed and raised over the centuries, it was the main access point from the stream to the parish church and the square.
The Bridge had a strategic role also during the First World War and is depicted in many period images with the passage of troops and supplies.
The new reinforced concrete bridge, inaugurated on November 24, 1957, is named after the Grenadiers of Sardinia, defenders of Mount Cengio during the First World War.
The Grenadiers' Bridge of Caltrano was built with a dual purpose: first to improve the road network towards the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities, and second to divert traffic from the town center.
The bridge rises about 40 meters above the riverbed of the Astico and has a central arch of about 200 meters in length.
