The Roana bridge was for a long time a beautiful dream of the people of Roana, Mezzaselva, and Rotzo, who, to reach the other fractions and municipalities, had to cross the deep Val d'Assa and then ascend it. Not everyone was in favor of its construction, and there were various debates and protests. Only in 1894 did the City Council begin to be interested in the issue.
In the summer of 1895, the date for the bidding for the construction work was set (August 22), but at the same time, there were new municipal elections, and the "anti-bridge" faction gained majority. On August 7, 1895, 500 women, led by the "Togna Turca", an energetic and spirited woman, fearing that the new Council would abolish the project, stormed the town hall to disrupt the council and obtain a regular bidding process. That day, the council postponed the meeting to August 14, but this session was also opposed by the same group.
Therefore, on August 22, the famous bidding for the construction work took place regularly, which involved dividing the project into three lots. On February 13, 1896, the work began and was completed in November 1905, and finally, on July 17, 1906, the first bridge was inaugurated.
During the Great War, on May 22, 1916, the bridge was blown up by the Italian army due to the feared advance of the Austro-Hungarian army. In 1919, work resumed for its reconstruction, and in November 1922, it was completed and opened to pedestrian traffic. The inauguration took place two years later, on September 24, 1924, with the then head of the government, Benito Mussolini.
Currently, the bridge is still the main connection to reach the other fractions of the Municipality of Roana and the other municipalities. It is passable by cars, motorcycles, and bicycles but is not recommended for pedestrians as it is often busy.
