Chiesa di San Paolo

Piazza Papadopoli, 9 , San Polo di Piave (TV) - 31020

In the Middle Ages, from the 10th century, it was taken over by the Emperors of Germany and for this reason, the place was called "Court of San Paolo." Later, until the mid-15th century, it was under the dominion of the Patriarchs of Aquileia, who were represented by a Gastaldo. In 1506, Angelo Gabriel, a Venetian patrician, was appointed Count of San Polo and his descendants retained feudal administration until 1805 when it was suppressed. The ancient castle built in the 12th century was practically demolished in 1680, leaving only a tower around which a large palace was built as the residence of the feudal lord (today, after radical modifications, it has taken on the form of a Gothic castle).

San Polo is a parochial church but not a mother church. The pastoral care dates back to the 8th century as evidenced by the "Placito of Liutprando," King of the Lombards, from June 6, 743. At that time, the Patriarch of Aquileia reserved for himself within the territory of the Diocese of Ceneda "...four parishes situated along his road for the sake of the way or the provision...). The four unnamed parishes were: San Cassiano del Meschio, San Fior di Sopra, San Polo, and San Remedio (which no longer exists). The first church we have record of existed in the 13th century, was expanded starting from 1650, and consecrated by Mons. Daniel Delfino, Bishop of Philadelphia, coadjutor to Patriarch Giovanni Delfino and Elected of Aquileia, on September 19, 1686. It had a single nave, but in 1912, two side naves were added. In November 1917, after the defeat of Caporetto, the church, as well as the whole village, was robbed, devastated, and almost demolished. The damages, considering the loss of works of art and archival documents, were incalculable. In 1922, it was practically rebuilt, and in 1923 the bell tower was also reconstructed according to the design of architect Vincenzo Rinaldo from Venice, who had erected the previous one in 1908. The church, along with the bell tower, was solemnly inaugurated on October 18, 1925.
