Sacrario Francese

Via Feltrina (SS 348) , Pederobba (TV) - 31040

Along the State Road SS348 that leads from Treviso to Feltre, it is possible to admire the only French memorial dating back to the Great War. It was inaugurated in June 1937 simultaneously with that of Bligny, a war monument near Verdun that holds over 4,400 Italian fallen soldiers who died on the Western Front.

Architect Camille Montagne designed a giant wall to symbolize the enemy advance halted by the sacrifice of these soldiers. Within the wall are the niches where approximately a thousand Transalpine soldiers rest, who arrived in April 1918 and fell in the Battle of the Solstice and the Final Battle. At the foot of this great wall, their names can be read in alphabetical order.

The complex is completed by the gigantic group of statues in the foreground: Mother Italy and Mother France are depicted united in grief, while holding their deceased Son on their knees.
