Chiesa SS. Maria Assunta e Tommaso
Contrà chiesa di Castelvecchio, 1 , Valdagno - 36078
The church of Castelvecchio stands at an altitude of 802 meters on a small plateau of heights and hills that separates the upper Agno Valley from that of Chiampo, almost at the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Verona. Of the six fractions of the municipality of Valdagno, Castelvecchio has always been the most evocative and welcoming for tourists, attracted by the intense green of forests and meadows, the thin and healthy air, and the enchanting view of the church resting on the summit of a rock. The town owes its name almost certainly to the construction of a castle, or a watchtower, desired by Ezzelino da Romano in the 13th century for defensive purposes, which was later destroyed during the invasion of Frederick II. Many of today's inhabitants descend from groups of German immigrants who settled in various areas of upper Vicenza to work the lands allocated to them by the Lordship of Verona in exchange for control and defense of the area.
