S. Martino

Chiesetta di San Martino

Via San Martino , Schio - 36015

It is likely that the church of San Martino was built on the foundations of a pagan shrine dedicated to the Nymphs, as evidenced by an inscription dating back to the 4th century.

The first construction as a Christian temple dates back to the 7th century, and then a reconstruction was carried out around the year one thousand.
1185 is the year of the first documented mention of the church, which is considered the oldest in the upper Vicenza area.
It has belonged to the Clementi family since 1810, the year when it was liberated from the priory that housed it due to the Napoleonic suppression.
Since 1985, it has become a place of Marian worship, following the alleged apparitions reported by Renato Baron (formerly the church's custodian).
The official church has never fully supported such phenomena, always taking a cautious stance in this regard.

It has a simple structure, and nearby is the ancient bell tower.
It has a gabled design, and the façade features only an entrance portal, flanked by a plaque summarizing the church's history.
The ancient plaster reveals the remains of the modest decorations.
The straight rear wall features Romanesque windows.
In the bell tower, in Romanesque style, there is an ancient bell that dates back to 1492.
The interior of the church is characterized by a ceiling with wooden trusses and a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, created by Romano Cremasco in 1940.
There are also visible traces of the formation of the primitive apse on either side of the altar.

A copy of the Roman epigraph is preserved here, originally placed in the church and now kept in the Naturalistic Archaeological Museum of Vicenza, which reads: NYMPHIS LYMPHISQ(UE) / AUGUSTIS OB REDITUM / AQUARUM / P(UBLIUS) POMPONIUS / CORNELIANUS / C(LARISSIMUS) I(UVENIS) / UT VOVIT (translation: To the sacred nymphs and to the lymphs for the return of the waters. Publius Pomponius Cornelianus, a young man of the senatorial order, offered in vow).

The most interesting element of the church is the frescoes located on the wall behind the altar, dating from the late 14th century/early 15th century by an unknown artist but well-preserved. Among the depictions are Christ crucified, Saint Martin, The Madonna of the Milk, and The Madonna ante partum.
The frescoes show similarities with those present in the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in San Vito di Leguzzano and with those that adorned the external walls of the ancient church of Magrè, destroyed in 1945.

Being privately owned, it is quite difficult to visit its interior.
