The Basilica of Santa Fosca in Santa Maria Maggiore, better known as Santa Maria Maggiore, is called Madona Granda by the people of Treviso. In the 9th century, it was destroyed by the Barbarians who invaded Treviso and was rebuilt after the year 1000. The building underwent significant renovations in the 16th century but was severely damaged by air raids during World War II.
The bell tower, originally built as a military tower, has been altered over the centuries.
The interior consists of three naves, with large pointed arches on terracotta pillars; the roof is wooden and trussed. The transept and apse chapels were reconstructed in Renaissance style after the War of Cambrai in 1509.
To the left is the Tempietto della Madonna (1492), a square-shaped structure made of inlaid marble, which houses a fresco from the late 1300s depicting the Madonna with Child, attributed by some to Tommaso da Modena or his School. Due to the veneration of the image of the Virgin, in gratitude for the graces received, many Lords helped to give the chapel the dimensions of a Sanctuary.
Behind the tempietto is the semi-circular Chapel of the Baptistery, with frescoes by Ludovico Fiumicelli and Giovan Pietro Meloni from Crema dating to 1540.
