The Tronconi Trail of Tonezza leads you to panoramic mountain views from the summit of Monte Spitz.
The start above Contrà Sella
You start from the center of Tonezza, specifically from the parking lot near the sports center. Heading south, just after the parking lot, you will notice signage indicating the Fontanelle trail that leads up to Contrà Sella. If you want, you can comfortably drive this stretch and park at the Hotel Edelweiss, then continue on foot towards the Pracca area. After passing Contrada Sella, a dirt path begins with a slight uphill slope, the Tronconi Trail.
The Pozza del Giasso
You continue north, passing behind some old barns, now recently renovated and transformed into small residences. After the fourth baito, you reach the bend of the “Pozza del Giasso,” where the real trail begins. Despite attempts to waterproof it, it remains almost always dry. The itinerary then continues with a constant ascent bordered by dry stone walls and forests of beech and fir trees.
Passo della Vena and the fork with Campomolon
First, you reach Passo della Vena di Sotto with the summit of the “Sima dei Catùrni” on the left, and after 10 minutes, you also reach Passo della Vena di Sopra with a breathtaking panorama between Val della Vena, Rio Freddo, and Val d’Astico. At this point, you have reached 1534 meters, after an hour and a half of hiking.
From Passo della Vena, as an alternative route, you can take the road to the left that leads to Monte Campomolon with the homonymous fort and Monte Toraro, rich in history and memories.
The view from the summit of Spitz
The trail is all uphill and doesn’t give you a moment to catch your breath. You pass under the first peak of Spitz called “Pala Picola” and through some tunnels used as refuges during the Great War. After “Pala Picola,” you will find the “Pala Grande,” one of the three main peaks. For the final ascent, only dwarf pines and stones accompany us along the path.
The effort of the ascent is soon forgotten because from the summit, you enjoy a wonderful panorama. On clearer days, your gaze can reach, among others, Adamello and the Vetta d’Italia.
The return from Monte Spitz
For the return, you can retrace the Tronconi Trail or alternatively, for experienced hikers because it is challenging, the Tarbisa Trail, which ends near the Hotel Chiosco Alpino, just above the starting point of the Tronconi Trail.
