The origins of the church, which the residents of Thiene call "of Santa Lucia," are uncertain. It is known for sure that it was rebuilt around 1592 and that it was annexed to the hospital of S. Maria Maddalena, from which the original name derived, serving the poor and pilgrims.
It was restored for the first time in 1970 with a project led by architects Pietro Pezzel and Giuseppe Cortivo and then again in 2015, when the restoration of the stone elements, moldings, and plastered parts of the facade took place.
Today the church is owned by the municipality and hosts the Gallery of Modern Art.
