Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore

Via Castelgiuncoli 18 , Lonigo - 36045

In 1895, following a cholera epidemic, it was decided to equip Lonigo with a Cathedral worthy of its economic position, in honor of Christ the Redeemer.

The building, in the shape of a Latin cross, rises above a raised area of about 2 meters, accessed by a staircase.
The façade presents alternating bands of tuff stone and bricks, on a base of Chiampo stone. It takes inspiration from the façade of the Church of San Zeno in Verona and is articulated in three vertical parts, with the central part, 40 meters high, featuring a triangular crown decorated with arches; three pinnacles surmount the tympanum.
In the center, there is a rose window flanked by shelves that in 1995 accommodated the statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
The central portal, larger than the side ones, bears a mosaic on the lunette created by Venetian mosaicists, based on a design by the painter Cacciatori (Christ in Throne Among Angels), inspired by the Byzantine-Venetian tradition.

From the entrance, one enters a low narthex and then to the three naves, separated by marble columns and covered with exposed trusses. The floor is made of slabs of white and gray marble. At the upper part of the central nave, Gothic-style bifore open up. The smaller naves end with small semicircular apses. The main altar features a ciborium inspired by that of the Church of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan. The tabernacle was sculpted by Egisto Caldana. Above the main altar is displayed a Crucifix from the 16th century, previously located in the Vandinelli chapel of the Church of San Daniele, and of which there is a miraculous account of its finding in the fields called “Le Sante” after the oxen knelt down refusing to move.

Behind the altar, an organ was installed in 1909, covering the windows and changing the lighting of the interior spaces compared to the original design.
On the walls of the smaller naves, there are paintings of the Via Crucis made in Murano and inaugurated in 1930, with a frame designed by Ferdinando Forlati and executed by Giuseppe Regagioli. On the back wall, above the narthex, a stone statue of Christ the Redeemer was placed on July 20, 1919.
