Chiesa dei Santi Cristoforo, Quirico e Giulitta (Chiesa Vecchia)

Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, 44 , Lonigo - 36045

The church of Saints Christopher, Quirico, and Giulitta, dating back to the 7th-8th century and completely rebuilt in 1543, is one of the earliest churches erected in the area. Due to its ancient origins, it was for many centuries the reference symbol of social and religious organization.

It was built within the walls of Calmano Castle and took the title of Pieve at the end of the 11th century.
The first records date back to 1262, but it was modified in 1543 and again in 1615 when the Patriarch of Venice (Tiepolo) granted the addition of a nave and the reconstruction of the façade (current structure). In the 12th century, it became a “collegiata” that housed canons.
After the French Revolution, the Pieve was plundered of its silver and gold by Napoleon's troops.
In 1871, Bishop Farina deemed the church too small for the population, and several expansion projects were drafted but never realized.

The façade has four pilasters with composite capitals, a denticulated pediment, and an arched tympanum above the portal; the two smaller wings were added in the 18th century, while the bell tower dates back to 1573.
The three-nave interior is a square framed by post pillars and the alternation of pilasters and square windows on the walls. The main altar, from the 19th century, is neoclassical with two angels watching over the tabernacle, which is a small temple with a dome.
All the wooden furnishings (pulpit, choir, confessionals) are from the 18th century and of remarkable craftsmanship.
The masterpiece consists of six baroque altars in polychrome marble adorned with altarpieces and statues. Among the altarpieces from the 18th-century Veronese school, we note "The Deposition" by Saverio della Rosa, in the altar of Piety, of dramatic intensity, and the Madonna in Throne handing the scapular to St. Simon Stock by Giandomenico Gignaroli.
In the altar of the Carmine, there is the Last Supper by G. Angeli from 1749, from the Venetian school.
Finally, on the door of the sacristy, the “Sacred Conversation of the Virgin with Saints Christopher, Giulitta, and Quirico” by Benedetto Montagna is visible, a work from the 1500s that showcases gold highlights on the throne immersed in the light of twilight.
The organ, dating from 1854 and made by Giovanni Tonoli, an organ builder from Brescia, is located above the main door on an elegant 19th-century choir inside a harmonic case from the 18th century.
The restoration was presented in October 2000 with a significant inaugural concert.
