In ancient times, in the place where the present Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli stands, there was a small church dedicated to San Pietro in Lamentese, whose ancient origins are lost in history. Its presence is nonetheless documented around the 10th century, when the site housed a small monastery of Benedictine monks. In the subsequent centuries, it fell into a ruinous abandonment that lasted until 1486, when an image of the Virgin painted on the south wall of the church, after being desecrated and insulted, moved, marking the beginning of a miraculous activity. This event led to the construction of the monastery in the complex that we see today. Later, the building was sold, becoming the summer residence of the Venetian patricians, and the church fell into abandonment again.
In 1826, at the insistence of the faithful, it was provided with a chaplain, and the following year it was able to resume its functions. An impressive restoration work was initiated, and the church of Madonna dei Miracoli fully resumed its role as a Marian devotional center.
Today, the church, established as a parish in 1955, is officiated by the diocesan clergy; having been granted some papal privileges, it celebrates the annual feast, by decree of the Holy See, on the fourth Sunday after Easter.
