Itinerario 3 - Le grandi ville e il centro storico

Via Risaie, 1 , Lonigo - 36045

Challenging route, to be done by car and on foot, achievable in a whole day.

Villa Pisani Bonetti, Bagnolo di Lonigo: listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it was designed in 1541 by a young Andrea Palladio who was inspired by the volumes of classical buildings, reinterpreting their severe monumentality. The villa and the renovated Barchessa host international cultural and contemporary art events organized by the Bonetti Bedeschi family.

Rocca Pisana: designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1567, Rocca Pisana is considered an absolute masterpiece of the Venetian Renaissance. Its unmistakable volumes, with the elegant octagonal dome, harmoniously fit on the hill that crowns the city of Lonigo.

Villa San Fermo: the monumental Entrance of the Rivers (designed by Francesco Bagnara in the 19th century) is the main entrance of the 19th-century villa of the Giovanelli princes. The work takes its name from the statues placed above the arches, which allegorically represent the main Italian rivers. The background is made scenic by a complex play of romantic grottos.

Church of the Most Holy Redeemer: Cathedral, completed in 1895, built in neogothic style.

The Torrione, the medieval tower: the first sources date back to 976, but it seems that the walls of the Castle of Lonigo were already erected by the Romans (150-100 BC), who founded several colonies in the Vicenza area to oversee the mountains and face the invasions of the Alemanni. The castle, under the Counts of Vicenza, was located on a hill along the Novo river. With the Scaliger and Venetian domains, the sieges and destructions ceased, but by the sixteenth century, the Castle of Lonigo was almost in ruins as the City of Vicenza had suspended its maintenance. Today, only the Torrione, about 33 meters high, and the Scaliger Tower, which became a prison (Torre delle Carceri), remain.

Piazza Garibaldi - Palazzo Pisani: building constructed in 1556 and attributed to the architect Michele Sanmicheli. Access to the square is through the rustic block archway, which occupies two floors of the entire palace.

Piazza Matteotti - Teatro Comunale "G. Verdi": the only historical theater of the 19th century in the province of Vicenza, the Comunale Theater replaced the 18th-century Teatro dei Concordi to provide the city of Lonigo with an accessible venue for employees, workers, and farmers. It opened in 1892 with the performance of Un ballo in maschera and until 1977 hosted important names in opera and prose. Transformed into a cinema and later closed for extensive restoration, it was reopened in 1993 and has since hosted a rich theatrical season annually.
