Santa Maria

Chiesa Arcipretale di Santa Maria

Via Pace Giordani, 1 , Valli del Pasubio - 36030

The archpriest church of St. Mary was built as a replacement and on the same site as the previous one consecrated in 1342, during the papacy of Pope Clement VI, which in turn seems to have replaced a chapel, which had already become a parish in 1297, officiated by a German priest named Fridericus.
Due to the increase in the population, and also because of the dilapidated conditions of the old church, in the middle of the 18th century, the enlargement of the choir began, completed on September 29, 1760.
In the historic meeting of the heads of families on August 29, 1762, the decision was made to completely demolish the old building and construct a new one.
In 1763, with the permission of Cardinal Antonio Marino Priuli, then Bishop of Vicenza, the works began.
By 1772, the current church was built and was consecrated in 1899.
The two archpriests who initiated and completed the work were Carlo Bidese and his successor Giuseppe Bidese, both from Arsiero, which is why the new church distinctly reflects the architectural lines of their hometown.
The artworks kept in the demolished church, dated before 1772, were transferred to the new church, adding value to it and making it appear like a treasure chest.
The current church is characterized externally by a majestic staircase that distinguishes the sacred space from that of the underlying Piazzetta Perori Girali.
Inside the church, on the left side, the altar dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario and on the right that of the Madonna del Carmine. In the niches, designed by the lateral spans, facing the entrance, are the altar of the Pietà and that dedicated to St. Lucia; towards the presbytery, the altar of St. Joseph and that of St. Anthony.
On the ceiling, the three frescoes of the Immaculate Conception, the Coronation of Mary, and the Assumption follow one another.
In the central arch above the entrance, stands the organ of the Serassi brothers from Bergamo, still functioning, installed in 1832.

On either side of the main entrance, two plaques of great historical significance are embedded in the wall.
The first plaque recalls how the old church was consecrated in 1342, and in a postscript, how the new one was subsequently erected in 1772, with Archpriest Don Giuseppe Bidese.
The second plaque commemorates the restorations carried out by Archpriest Don Pietro Talin in 1889 and the consecration that followed on October 5 of the same year.
