The church of San Vitale is the parish church of Castelnovo and the original church was initially built during the 13th century. By 1273 it had assumed the role of parish church, surpassing the hillside and older church of San Lorenzo.
The new church of San Vitale was constructed starting in 1894 and was built over almost 18 years due to the lack of necessary funds at certain times. The officiation ceremony took place on April 28, 1912, the day on which San Vitale is celebrated.
The church of San Vitale was built in the neo-Gothic style. Inside, it features a single nave with a ceiling characterized by a series of sails and six side chapels, three on each side. The ceiling of the choir and the apse has a series of pointed arches that depart from an octagonal drum.
The church houses six altars, five in the church and one in the oratory. All the altars, except for the Madonna's Altar built in 1913, are derived from the old chapel and were made between the 17th and 18th centuries.
The canvas placed on the Altar of the Name of Jesus depicts the Circumcision of Jesus, while the canvas of the Altar of the Saints depicts various Saints and these canvases were created by Costantino Pasqualotto. The Altar of the Madonna del Rosario houses the canvas depicting the Madonna del Rosario by Alessandro Maganza.
The canvases depicting The Martyrdom of San Vitale by Pietro Ricchi and the Deposition of Jesus from the Cross by Antonio De Pieri are placed above the side doors, although originally they were installed in the former main altar and in place of the statue of Jesus on the cross in the Altar of the Crucifix.
