The church of San Leonardo in Ignago was built, most likely, out of devotion by German workers who immigrated to the Vicentino during the 15th century. It was restored in 1711 and was completely rebuilt in the early 1900s at the behest of Don Bortolo Fochesato, who, being an emigrant and skilled mason himself, proposed to the family heads the construction of a larger church dedicated to a growing community.
The response was enthusiastic: "We will make the necessary sacrifices, we will all contribute by offering a liter of freshly milked milk per week, and in turn each district will give its contribution in working hours to help with the new church." In Don Bortolo's time, the rector of the church was called a curate and depended on the archpriest of Castelnovo, and for this reason Don Bortolo had to ask for and obtain a permit from the parish priest of the mother church to commence the works of the new church.
These consisted of the demolition of much of the old structures, except for the small and artistic presbytery, which is still intact today and has recently been restored to its ancient form. A church was built, larger in surface area and height, enclosing the previous one: the signs of the ancient marble stone floor are still evident, as well as a painting against the presbytery, which has remained intact and indicates the dimensions of the previous church.
