The Ancient Pieve of Santa Maria probably dates back to the 7th-8th century after the establishment of the diocese of Vicenza. The building, likely modified and rebuilt, is not what we see today.
In place of the current church, there stood a three-nave church definable as a basilica, also considering the wealth of statues, frescoes, and inscriptions that adorned it. This ancient church, propped up for years as it threatened to collapse, was largely demolished in 1867: the remaining parts of the previous building were the atrium, the presbytery, and the bell tower.
The current church was inaugurated in 1868, and Alessandro Rossi, who lived in Pieve from 1903 to 1915, played a decisive role in giving the interior of the church the appearance it still maintains today, thanks to his donations of furnishings and decorations. In 1907, he also had the floor constructed, later acquiring the paintings of the Stations of the Cross and commissioning Tomaso Pasquotti to execute the paintings in the choir (1908).
