Chiesetta di Moceniga

Località Moceniga , Rosolina (RO) - 45010

Built by the noble Venetian brothers Alvise and Marcantonio Mocenigo at the end of the 1700s, it was blessed by Bishop Mons. Civran on October 29, 1790. The small church, first passed to a religious foundation in Vicenza and then to the Delta Padano entity, was donated to the Diocese of Chioggia by the latter in 1968.

Bishop Adriano Tessarollo in 2015 – as he explains in a booklet published for this occasion, edited by G. Marangon – deemed it appropriate to proceed with the recovery of the building, which was now in degradation and also subject to acts of vandalism, to offer tourists visiting the lowland area of Rosolina a place for spiritual rest and, under certain circumstances, for prayer and worship. The funds for the intervention were made available by the diocese, the CEI-Cultural Heritage (8 x thousand), and the GAL Delta Po; project designers: architect T. Pontesan and architect M. Furlani.

The sacred building measures 10.60 m x 7 x 6.30 in height: the elegant façade is adorned with two semi-columns and a large triangular pediment, and bears a plaque above the portal that illustrates the dedication to God and to the Mother of God “conceived without original sin.”

It is noteworthy that the dedication to the Immaculate Conception occurred long before the official proclamation of the dogma (December 8, 1854), testifying to a devotion already rooted in the Christian people. Inside, of essential simplicity, the marble altar is topped by a copy of the statue of the Immaculate Madonna by Antonio Bonazza (18th century) – the original was transferred in 1973 to the parish church of Rosolina – while outside, on the square, a plaque recalls the ancient wellhead later moved to the rectory of Rosolina, bearing the date of construction of the church (1790) and that of the current intervention (2014).

The restoration work involved cleaning, rehabilitation, integration, and replacement of damaged or missing parts – from the roof to the fixtures, to the floor and systems – throughout the sacred building, including the small sacristy. Inside, on the counter-façade, a plaque has finally been placed to commemorate the radical restoration desired by Bishop Mons. Adriano Tessarollo.
