Chiesa di San Rocco

Chiesa di San Rocco

Via Edificio , Torrebelvicino - 36036

The inhabitants of Torrebelvicino decided to dedicate a church to San Rocco in the year 1630, and it is unknown when it was completed. Given its size, it was probably used as a lazaretto during the plague epidemic that hit the area in 1631. Later, it was maintained by hermits.
On the occasion of the pastoral visit of the Bishop of Vicenza in 1902, the celebration of St. Rocco had already declined to the point that the annual Mass on the day of the patron saint was suspended.

The church is built with poor materials and features a single nave without vaults or ceilings. The crossing of the apse and part of the roof have collapsed. The masonry structures are very degraded, partly due to the collapse of the covering structures and the consequent heavier infiltration of water into the walls, which has a disintegrating effect. The apse is also deeply damaged, given the collapse of the brick barrel vault that covered it. The roof is very degraded with collapsed sections. The roof trusses are supported by the walls via large brackets made of solid stone.
