Aeroporto di Thiene "Arturo Ferrarin"

The Thiene Airport "Arturo Ferrarin" plays a key role during the First World War, as it represented one of the two main bases of the Italian Air Force due to its proximity to the Pasubio - Altipiani di Folgaria and Asiago front line. At the time of the Austrian offensive in May 1916, which led the imperial army to conquer the Asiago plain, the site served for several weeks as the main Italian base, from which fighters and observers took off to participate in the resistance and the counteroffensive of June-July.

The airport was evacuated during the summer of 1916, as it came under fire from long-range Austrian heavy artillery. It was used intermittently until the end of the conflict and then decommissioned.

During the Second World War, in July 1943, it was reopened as an emergency "landing strip" for the bombing units of the Royal Italian Air Force stationed at the nearby military airport in Vicenza, soon replaced by fighter units of the Luftwaffe and the Republican National Aviation.

In the area parallel to the old military airport site in Thiene, the new civil airport was inaugurated on October 4, 1970, where the AeroClub of Vicenza began its operations.

It is currently managed by the Thiene Airport Company S.r.l., which enhances and promotes the activities of the airport. The site hosts the firefighting aircraft of the Civil Protection. The airport has logistical, sporting, and cultural significance. It deals with: general aviation, workshop and hangar services, is equipped with a fuel point, and sports activities related to flying such as gliding, skydiving, ballooning, sports flying, and helicopters. Thiene Airport also has a museum hub, the RTHM (Rome-Tokyo Hangar Museum).

It is equipped with a lit grass runway, extending 1.2 km.

On October 16 and 17, 2021, on the occasion of the centenary of the Rome-Tokyo transcontinental flight by the famous Thiene aviator Arturo Ferrarin, the Frecce Tricolori participated to seal the conclusion of the celebrations in the city, and a new monument was inaugurated in memory of the epic feat that took place in 1920.
