Pieve di San Giorgio

The foundation of the Pieve of San Giorgio probably dates back to the Lombard era. This church became the spiritual center of the right side of the Alta Valle dell’Astico and Posina, evolving from a simple country chapel.
Over the centuries, it underwent various modifications and additions. The original structure was Romanesque in style with Lombard influences: a rectangular plan, a very simple façade, adorned along the perimeter with a frieze of blind arches. On the northern wall of the central nave, the oldest frescoes from the 12th-13th century are present, depicting scenes of offerings. They were partly ruined in 1630 when, due to the plague, the two walls were completely whitewashed. The rediscovery and recovery of these frescoes occurred in the 20th century.
In the 15th century, the façade was enriched with a portico and a breach was opened on the south side to insert a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great. The pronaos is of a Renaissance style, and the inscription on the architrave of the entrance portal (1470) indicates the date when the restoration work of the church was completed, during which the construction of the bell tower, the expansion of the apse, and the refurbishment of the pronaos were finalized.
Other interesting works include the panels of Hope, on the main altar. They depict the "Virgin with Child and Saints" and the polyptych by Battista da Vicenza (1408) preserved in the chapel of Saint Anthony the Great. The church escaped destruction in 1916 and went through a long period of abandonment. In 1976, due to the earthquake, it suffered damage that required immediate conservation work, which was completed in the autumn of 1980.
Outside, the bell tower stands out with its pointed spire and the ogival twin windows of the bell chamber dating back to the 15th century.
